SOE Minister, Dahlan Iskan, has a plan to cover as much as the salt produced land. This is to improve the production and quality of the salt, and stopped imported salt especially salt for consumption.

According to him, all this time there is only limited produce of first quality salt. Because the first layer is covered with sand and even mud, the second layer still has soil-smell, and the third layer will become the first quality salt in very limited amount.
"With the membrane (plastic coating), all the salt production will be first quality. And it can increase the production up to 20%. In addition, the production is faster because the temperature is higher," he said.
He said the program will be implemented starting next year summer as it is currently still rainy season. They are still calculating how much funds to be prepared.
"Roughly we will need around IDR 20 million / ha, but we are still calculating to get exact amount. This will be done gradually based on the abilities, but can be done in mass as well," he added.
The purpose of the program is that Indonesian will no longer need to import the salt, especially for consumption needs.
"But we will still need to import salt for industry. Because industry really needs a lot of salt such as paper industry and oil mining industries, while domestic production can’t fulfill these industry needs," said Dahlan Iskan, who is also the former president director of PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara).
"Maybe in the next 10-20 years,(we) can fulfill the industries need," said Dahlan.
